Virginia Sales Tax Required To Be Filed And Paid Electronically

Businesses that collect and remit Virginia sales tax will soon be required to file and pay sales tax electronically. Businesses that file on a monthly basis are required to file and pay electronically beginning with the July 2012 sales tax return, due on August 20, 2012. Businesses that file on a quarterly basis will be required to file and pay electronically beginning with the July through September 2013 sales tax return, due on October 20, 2013.

Pre-printed sales tax forms will no longer be mailed to you. Even if no sales tax is due, forms reflecting “0” must be submitted electronically. There are three, free online filing/payment options with Virginia:

  1. eForms (go to www.tax.viginia.gov/eforms): You can prepare your sales tax return by filling in the appropriate fields (set up much like the paper forms), submitting the form, and paying electronically. You can store your account and banking information on this site for reuse each month or quarter.
  2. Business iFile (go to www.tax.virginia.gov/ifile): This option enables taxpayers to not only file and pay sales tax, but also provides full service online account maintenance. In addition to eForms above, you can schedule payments on a date you specify and view up to 14 months of your filing history. Enroll and log in with the user ID and password you select.
  3. Web upload (go to www.tax.virginia.gov/webupload): This option enables taxpayers to upload tax returns and payment files from your computer directly to Virginia Department of Taxation. For more information on this option, please visit the website listed above.
