Hampton Roads Partners Recognized for Distinguished Careers

Thomas Brooks, CPA and Michael Haigh, CPA, J.D. retired from PBMares, LLP after devoting more than 60 years of experience combined helping clients across Hampton Roads. Both retirements took effect December 31 when they were recognized by the firm for their contributions.

“Tom has been an active community leader and a stalwart leader contributing to the success of our firm and Michael’s tax expertise has been a valuable resource to PBMares. We wish them both an enjoyable and well-deserved retirement,” said Alan Witt, CPA, CEO.

Brooks joined PBMares in 1990 with international public accounting experience. During his tenure, he helped clients ranging from publicly-traded companies to sole proprietorships. His areas of expertise included employee benefit plans, construction, real estate development and property management, manufacturing and service industries and convalescent care centers. Brooks currently serves on the Board of Advisors for the Virginia Living Museum and is involved with the Oyster Point Rotary Club, among many other volunteer positions. He received his Bachelor of Science in accounting from Virginia Tech.

Haigh began his career as an associate attorney with a local law firm before joining the accounting firm in 1983 that would later become PBMares, LLP. During his tenure, he was the senior tax policy partner and focused on real estate partnerships, LLCs, like-kind exchanges and tenants in common interests, as well as individual tax and business tax planning and preparation. One of the many ways Haigh remains involved in the community is through the Council of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra Chorus where he is also a vocalist. He received his Juris Doctor from Western New England School of Law, a Master of Law degree in taxation from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary and a bachelors in the Arts from Duke University.

“PBMares has a succession plan in place that allows us to attract and develop leaders who will serve our clients through partner retirements,” said Witt. “Anyone who worked with Tom or Michael will be in good hands as they work with one of our other strong accountants and business advisors.”
